Trust in the Goodness of Things

I will steep myself in goodness.

I will listen to birds and savor mornings
taking sips of each passing moment.

I will sit in stillness and remember
not-doing is equally as important.
If not more-so.

I will watch baby cows, listen to chickens,
watch golden light spread across the field.

I will follow joy that arrives in tiny surprises:
A passionate conversation with a stranger,
reading an inspiring poem,
the sound of a scarlet macaw,
an unexpected phone call from a dear friend,
the boisterous greeting of a friend’s dog.

I will put down my busy-ness
and turn towards what is real.

Long time friendships.
200-year-old oak trees.
Celebrations.
My heart’s desires.
The sweet scent of jasmine.

I will reach for the stars and make
dreams come true.

I will talk with animals,
sit with the elderly,
hold hands with my mother,
look deeply into peoples’eyes
when I talk to them.

Kindness will be my creed,
generosity my action.

When in doubt, be kind.
I will trust in the goodness of things.
